Frequently Asked Questions

What is your purpose for the site and what do you hope to accomplish by selling these crafts? The primary goal of Hands Around the World is to support and encourage artists to continue producing their art both as a means of financial support and continuing the traditional artistic expressions of their particular culture.

How does my purchasing a craft help the artist?  Hands Around the World helps artists support themselves and their families by helping to create a market for their art and by making sure that they receive fair payment for the work that they produce. Hands Around the World is also often active in helping the artists or artists' village in other ways as well. Examples are anything from extra financial help to individual artists to distribution of clothing and supplies to Indian villages, including the donation of a boat motor to a Yanomamo village so that they have the means to reach medical attention when needed.

Who are you? Janet Browning, owner and founder of Hands Around the World, resides in the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee with her husband and two daughters. She has been an artist and art educator for many years. She has taught art in the public school system as well as founding a non-profit enrichment program for children in the arts that has operated all over the South Eastern United States. Her knowledge and love of art led her to the interest she has in artists from all over the world and their work.

What is your relationship with the artists? Hands Around the World maintains a personal relationship with most of its artists, encouraging them in their endeavors and making sure that they are receiving fair payment for their goods.

How do you select the crafts? Crafts are selected for their traditional cultural value as well as for their beauty or craftsmanship.

What is your guarantee? Hands Around the World offers a complete guarantee. If you are dissatisfied with your order for any reason, simply return it for a full refund.

How do you ship? Why aren't shipping costs included on your order page? How do I know the final charges? If the shipping charges are too high, can I cancel the order? Shipping is done with either Priority Mail or UPS, whichever is most cost-effective. Shipping costs are not included because of the huge variety of sizes and weights of the items we carry. Many businesses simply charge a percentage, but in many instances we feel this can be unfairly high. Most postage charges are between eight and fifteen dollars. If the package is going to be expensive to send, you will be informed by e-mail of the charges and of course you may cancel your order if you feel they are too high.

Can I special order? Hands Around the World prides itself in giving its customers individual attention. We are more than happy to search for that special item or addition to your collection. Just let us know what you are looking for and we will be glad to try to help!
