Guahibo Indians
Guahibo Indians (Gwah-hee-boh) live in the
Amazon Basin of South America. Both men and women make a variety of
handcrafts. The women make dolls from bark and fiber, decorated with seeds.
The Guahibo men are accomplished wood carvers, carving ritual weapons or
sculptures. The Guahibo have been affiliated with the Catholic Church for some
time and their art often reflects a religious theme.

Venezuela - Andes Mountains
The artists in the Andes mountains of South America are known for their
wonderfully imaginative and diverse pottery. Mucugres means "Place of
clay" in the ancient Indian language of the Venezuelan Andes. Mucugres
pottery uses local clay to form their own unique and creative style of pottery
pieces.
Mabel is a well known Andean artist that is known
for her intricately sculptured details on her Nativities and boxes. For more

Central America
Mexico
Oaxaca, Mexico
Oaxaca, Mexico is famous for its wood carvers who carve fantastic creatures
out of wood then paint them with meticulous and colorful designs. A very
collectible Mexican folk art shown in museums world wide, these pieces are
readily recognizable. These angels are carved in the traditional Oaxacan style
by well known artist Jesus Sosa Calvo. They feature removable wings and

Purepecha Indians
The Purepecha Indians are a very
traditional tribe living in the Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico. They still
speak their native Indian tongue and adhere
to many of the ancient customs. They make charming sculptures from area clay which
they hand paint. They combine Catholicism with their native beliefs resulting in
wonderfully colorful and fanciful folk art.
